Cultural Diversity — The Wealth of Society

2017

The project, created by journalist Rozita German and Asarkya studio, consists of a cycle of eight nine-minute documentary reports dedicated to the cultural and national diversity of Abkhazia. Filmed across the republic, the stories highlight the lives of ordinary people — representatives of different national and religious communities. Over the course of two months, the films were broadcast on the Abaza-TV channel, while parallel screenings and public discussions were held at SKLAD_, bringing together the film protagonists, cultural and civic figures, and a wider audience.

Inspired by the films, curator Nasta Agrba together with photographer Alan Vouba organized the exhibition Cultural Diversity — The Wealth of Society. It featured photographs and collected artifacts that expanded on the narratives shown in the reports. In this way, the project moved beyond the screen format and created a space for public dialogue on how different communities live in Abkhazia.

The initiative aimed to document and highlight the cultural diversity that still persists in the country despite the consequences of the 1992–1993 war. As Rozita German notes, the richness of diversity cannot be exhausted by just a few stories but is part of everyday life. In a multinational and multiconfessional society like Abkhazia, there exists a “unity of diversity” — a mutual influence of cultures, traditions, and languages that together shape a shared living space.
