In 2013, several hundred families of Muhajir descendants - Muslims who were forcibly resettled to the Ottoman Empire during the Caucasian War - were evacuated from Syria by the Abkhaz authorities to save the community members from civil war. The migration process continued in the following years: by 2018, the number of repatriates from Syria reached 800 people. The republic’s government, charitable organisations and public figures provided support to the repatriate community. Currently, about 400 of them live permanently in the republic. As part of the event, the Asarkia TV studio presented a documentary film about the lives of the repatriates, in which the protagonists share their experiences of returning to their historical homeland, their impressions of modern Abkhazia and their plans for the near future.
