Before the start of The Second World War, the Greek population of Abkhazia reached 35,000, making up approximately 11% of the republic. However, following the deportation of Greeks to Kazakhstan during the Stalinist era, the size of the Greek community decreased to 2–3% of the population. During the War in Abkhazia, even more members left for their historic homeland.
As part of the event, the Asarkia TV studio presented a documentary film about the life of the community in modern Abkhazia. The film also highlights the contribution of Abkhazian Greeks to the development of the republic’s architecture, as well as the ongoing role the community plays in the country’s culture. One of the film’s protagonists, Elena Karabulat, teaches at the Sukhum Music College, has mentored many Abkhaz classical musicians and has made a significant contribution to the development of the arts in the region.
