Today, the Jewish community in Abkhazia numbers between 150 and 200 people. In 1970, the Jewish population in the republic reached 3,600, most of whom emigrated to Israel during the 1970s and again in 1993 with the War in Abkhazia.As part of the event, the Asarkia TV studio presented a documentary film about the lives of members of this small community. The filmmakers show how the film’s protagonists celebrate Shabbat and Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, and discuss what it means for them to be Jewish in Abkhazia.
