The Sukhum Urban Forum ‘Habitat’ brought together experts in urban development to discuss the future of architectural heritage and public spaces in Sukhum - a city still affected by the consequences of war. Residents need a safe and comfortable environment. Among Sukhum’s main challenges are poor infrastructure, tasteless tourist constructions, lack of pavements, bicycle lanes, playgrounds and recreational areas. However, the city also has clear advantages: its climate, rich architectural heritage and unique national traditions connected to urban space. Community groups and civic movements are actively emerging in Sukhum - such as ‘Sukhum Chooses Bicycles’, ‘Youth Against Traffic Accidents’, ‘Sportapsny,’ and various volunteer organisations. Yet, these initiatives often lack coordination, a shared platform for dialogue, and resources to complete their projects. The shortage of urban planning education and fresh ideas limit the city’s potential, while a lack of expertise and professional consultation leads to misjudging key issues. The Sukhum Urban Forum aimed at filling this gap by creating a space for learning and dialogue - connecting activists, citizens, authorities and invited specialists. The forum’s programme was divided into four blocks: Tactical Urbanism, Rebooting the Post-Soviet City, Ecology of the Modern City and Road Safety. Each block formed working groups led by moderators, whose task was to develop potential solutions to the identified problems.
