A series of screenings of films from the 1920s and 1930s shot in the Caucasus about the Caucasus. We are bringing forgotten and rare films back to the screen to see the region through the eyes of cinema from that era.
"Silent films shot in the Caucasus a century ago offer a rare opportunity to see the region through the eyes of contemporaries of that era. These are not just artistic expressions, but living testimonies of the time. In an era of global digitalization, when images change at an incredible speed, we invite you to pause and look closely at these frames — at the faces, gestures, and landscapes. There is a documentary, almost anthropological interest in this," says film program curator Salome Meladze.
The film program becomes a space for musical and sound experimentation: all three silent film screenings will be accompanied by a mix of audio tracks compiled by David Pipia, and on one of the evenings, Mikhail Alkhazov will join with musical improvisation on the viola. This practice takes us back to the early tradition of tappers — live soundtracks for silent films in real time — and at the same time offers a reinterpretation of images from the past through the prism of contemporary sound. The new soundtrack serves as a mediator of dialogue between the era of early cinema and our time. The musical curator is Nina Nachkebia.
