Ultima Thule is a phantom island, first mentioned by the ancient Greek geographer Pytheas. No one knows exactly what land he was describing. Sailors returned with stories about Ultima Thule - of battles with tribes of dwarves, of a frozen sea and a shining polar star - but was it really this island? It's a mystical, imagined edge of the world that appeared on maps for centuries. It existed, and yet it didn’t.The exhibition explored different relationships with nonexistent (‘other’) worlds: some are based on elusiveness, others on escapism and some call for active engagement and imagination. The conversation about the utopian, about fairy tales and dreams, ends with the story of recent protests in contemporary Abkhazia. The artists remain realists - and that’s why they demand the impossible. The exhibition was made possible with the support of the Amshra Charitable Foundation.
