The program features four films that each engage with reality in different ways. Mohsen Makhmalbaf’s A Moment of Innocence reconstructs an episode from the director’s own youth: as a young man, he wounded a police officer, and in the film, he encounters him again years later. Asghar Farhadi’s A Separation tells the story of a married couple who are splitting up over the question of whether to leave the country. The film won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. In Jafar Panahi’s The Mirror, a schoolgirl tries to make her way home alone through Tehran after school. Gradually, the familiar story takes a turn, and what unfolds on screen begins to call into question the very boundary between film and reality. Abbas Kiarostami’s pseudo-documentary Close-Up is based on a real court case, and its participants play themselves.
