In Abkhazia, gender roles in everyday life are shaped by traditional social structures. However, people want to look forward to a brighter future, and therefore change is inevitable.
Today, many women are striving to understand what they want for themselves and for society. They seek independence and question a social order where men dominate, while women are confined to the roles of mother, sister, daughter, caregiver or servant.
Based on an article published in the Humanitarian Programmes Centre’s collection ‘Conflict or Development?’ (2023), participants in the meeting discussed what it means to be a woman in Abkhazia today.
