Memory, Untitled was an interactive installation by Aron Rossman-Kiss dedicated to the State Archive of Abkhazia, which was burned down during the 1992–1993 War in Abkhazia. The artist invited residents of Abkhazia to share personal memories of key events in the country’s history. He then organised the collected texts and photographs into five categories: childhood, war, the sea, celebrations and feasts, dreams and visions.
From this material, Rossman-Kiss created a card catalogue. Placed in filing cabinets reminiscent of archival and library systems, the memories of eyewitnesses were interwoven with the fictional narrative of a librarian - a made-up character who also lived through the upheavals of contemporary Abkhazian history. By embedding these testimonies in literary narrative, the artist drew attention to the fragile, elusive nature of memory - always hovering between reality and imagination.
The exhibition brought together various forms of documentation and cataloguing typical of any national archive: newsreels, historical photographs, written testimonies, index cards and archival ‘files.’ A video of burning flames on one screen recalled the tragic fire. Together, these elements turned the installation into a memorial that also attempted to compensate for loss by building a new collective archive.
