Natalya Madilyan lives and works in Abkhazia. Her practice addresses family history, the memory of places, and the relationship between people and their environment. Documentary photography forms the basis of her work, which she extends through books, paper, and objects.
Look at Us Tenderly grew out of years of observation of the aftermath of an ecological catastrophe that struck the forests of Abkhazia. The story of the dying boxwood groves led the artist to investigate the connections between trees, insects, and people who inhabit a shared landscape and bear a shared fate. In this work, Natalya examines how environmental change affects the lives of local communities and reflects on destruction, recovery, and the interdependence of humans and their surroundings. The exhibition includes photographs, objects, and paper works produced in the course of her research.
The exhibition is supported by the Asarkia Foundation.
